Thank you, Jean Pierre, for this beautiful cover from the New Zealand Antarctic territory, the Ross Dependency! The cover has the postmark of Christchurch, December 2, 2009.

The stamps and cover, which were issued on November 25, 2009, commemorate the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Antarctic Treaty on December 1, 1959. The stamp inscriptions are based on the treaty’s articles:

  • Antarctica Shall be Used for Peaceful Purposes Only
  • Freedom of Scientific Investigation in Antarctica
  • International Co-operation in Scientific Investigation in Antarctica
