#902 German Antarctic Station 15/02/01

German Antarctic Station 150201Here is another marvelous cover from Antarctica: It was cancelled at the German Antarctic research station Neumayer III.

The letter was carried by the icebreaker FS Polarstern, where it was cancelled on February 1. On February 2 the cover was cancelled with a “PAQUEBOT” postmark and handed over to the South African postal service in Cape Town. Finally it arrived at my place on February 23, 2015.

The large cachet in the top left corner depicts the Neumayer-Station III, which is operated by the Alfred-Wegener-Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI). The small cachet below shows the inscription “35. Überwinterung Neumayer III” (35th overwinter survival), the cachet next to it has the inscription “2014 Antarktis 34. Überwinterung” (34th overwinter survival 2014).

The stamp is part of a set, which commemorates the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Germany and South Korea. It is a joint issue and was issued on June 6, 2013.

I have sent another cover via Neumayer Station to Radim, which you can see here.
