#300 French Southern and Antarctic Lands – Îles Glorieuses 10/02/12

Celebrating my 300th article I am presenting you a very special cover from the Îles Glorieuses (Glorioso Islands), which are part of the Scattered islands in the Indian Ocean (Îles Éparses) and belong to France. Jean Pierre sent me this truly marvelous cover on February 12, 2010. It arrived in Graz on March 8 (thus travelled 24 days).

The left stamp is part of the set “Scattered Islands Birds”, which was issued on July 1, 2008. It depicts the Great Frigatebird (Fregata minor). The three definitive stamps in the middle were issued on January 1, 2008, and depict the TAAF flag. The right stamp is part of the Scattered Islands stamp set, which was issued on June 1, 2007; it depicts a satellite image of the Îles Glorieuses. The cancellation has the inscription “T.A.A.F. – ILES GLORIEUSES – ILES EPARSES”.

In addition to the four postmarks there is a mark showing the coordinates 47°18 E/11°35 S, which roughly fits to the main island Grande Glorieuse, and a mark showing five stars, a turtle, a rock, and the logo of the Gendarmerie Nationale—as well as the inscription “Les îles éparses…/Le gendarme, agent postal”. I suppose this is the mark of the postal agent, who is a member of the Gendarmerie Nationale and who also signed the mark. An interesting article (in French) about the work of this lonely agent can be found here.

Jean Pierre, thank you very much for this special cover!

Addendum (April 7, 2010):

Jean Pierre told me the journey of the letter: It was posted in January at Paris-Orly Airport to Saint-Denis, Réunion, then sorted out to the T.A.A.F. headquarter in Saint-Pierre. Finally it is loaded on the vessel “Marion Dufresne”, which heads for the Scattered islands every three months carrying supplies and men.
