#555 Mayotte 11/09/08

Thank you, Jean Pierre, for sending this nice cover from Mayotte! It was posted in Mamoudzou on September 8 and arrived on September 16, 2011.

The left stamp was issued on 10 September 2011 and therefore was used before its issuing date! It depicts a Madjiliss ceremony. The two stamps on the right depict an orange (Citrus × sinensis) and kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra) with fruits. This set was issued on 18 August, 2011.

Thank you, Jean Pierre, for sending this airmail cover from Morocco! It was posted on January 9 and arrived on January 13, 2012.

The stamps are part of the set “Moroccon Currencies”, which was issued on October 20, 2011. The left coin was issued during the reign of Idris I (reigned from 788 to 791), the middle coin was issued under the last Almoravid king Ishaq Ben’Ali (died 1147), and the right stamp depicts a coin, which was issued under the Almohad caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf (1135-1184).

David sent me this nice cover from Mauritius, thank you very much! It was posted in Port Louis on December 12, 2010.

The left two stamps commemorate the fish species Cephalopholis sonnerati.

The middle stamp is entitled “Mauritius in World Literature”. It commemorates the writer Alexandre Dumas (1802-70) and his novel “Georges“.

The right stamp commemorates Dr. K. Hazareesingh, the former director of the Mahatma Gandhi Institute and a well-known Mauritian writer.

Ouari used a FDC, which was issued on September 25, 2011. It commemorates the “4ème Festival International de la Bande Dessinée Alger” (FIBDA), which was held from October 5 to 8, 2011.

The top stamp commemorates the flight of the airplane Silver Queen (a Vickers Vimy) from London to Cape Town in 1920 (info here).

The attached stamp set comemmorates the 24th UPU congress, which was held in Geneva. They depict the Sitalunga gazelle, the Jackson’s Hartebeest, the sport steeple chase, and the Kenyatta International Conference Centre. The set was issued on February 7, 2008.

It was posted on November 25 in Tunis. The top 2005 stamp  commemorates Jebba Karmassoud. The bottom 2009 stamp commemorates the 100th birthday of the poet Aboul-Qacem Echebbi (1909-1934).

The four attached stamps are part of the set “Indigenous Flowers of Mauritius”, which was issued on April 9, 2009. They depict the flowers Myonima abovata, Crinum mauritianum, Bremeria landia, and Distephanus populifolius.

The front side shows the entrance of the Ben Youssef Madrasa in Marrakech. On the back side the stamp “Morocco of Champions”, which was issued on December 28, 2007, is attached.

Jean Pierre sent me this beautiful cover from the Seychelles, thank you very much! It was posted in Victoria on January 27, 2010.

Jean Pierre affixed three stamps of the fish definitives series. They depict the Indian butterflyfish (Chaetodon mitratus), the goldbar wrasse (Thalassoma hebraicum), and the palette surgeonfish (Paracanthurus hepatus). The right two stamps are part of the set “25th Anniversary of Aldabra as a World Heritage Site”, which was issued on December 11, 2007. They depict the endangered plant Solanum aldabrensis and the dugong (Dugong dugon).
